Judo is a modern Japanese martial art and Olympic sport that emphasizes throws, pins, and submission techniques. Developed in 1882 by Jigoro Kano, Judo means “the gentle way,” reflecting its philosophy of using an opponent’s force against them rather than opposing it directly. Practitioners, called judoka, wear a traditional uniform known as a judogi and compete on a mat called a tatami.

The objective in Judo is to: • Throw the opponent to the ground with force and control (earning an ippon for an instant win), • Pin them for a specific duration, • Or submit them using joint locks or strangles (only in adult categories).

Judo promotes physical fitness, discipline, and mutual respect, making it both a competitive sport and a means of personal development.
