Basically, the planet got throw out its orbit. Temperatures got deathly cold, but we're still alive thanks to some pretty convenient technology. Everyone's economy is all weird, but who cares? We're pirates! We make our living by stealing whatever we can from whatever cities, compounds, or other ships we come across.
